| History
The roots of the Mid Atlantic Roller Hockey
Association can be traced back to the spring of 2005. Then North
Pittsburgh Hockey League members the McHenry Massive (now the Cumberland
Raiders) began to set up a tournament to be held in May of 2005.
The use of the internet brought in some high quality teams, but
a rescheduling forced the tournament to be moved to Pittsburgh and
hosted by the SteelHawks. Each team brought in a wealth of experience
and also knowledge of other teams in their specific regions. Through
the recruitment of teams by each new member, the association grew.
The first ranked tournament took place in December 2005 at the Holiday
Shootout Classic in Pittsburgh.
Vision
The MARHA is not existant to make a profit,
but rather to grow and change the sport of inline hockey. It is
the goal of the association to gain as many member teams as possible
in order to stage one of the greatest championships in sports. The
model behind this is the "March Madness" of NCAA basketball.
As more teams enter the association, the top teams in each region
will be selected to regionals (including affiliate league winners
for automatic bids). The regionals winners will move on to the championship.
The lofty goal of attaining enough teams to hold such a tournament
is what drives the association. Additionally, we strive to host
high quality tournaments that are competitive yet the most affordable
around. We do this because we are able to advertise tournaments
online or by word of mouth, and do not pay any staff to help set
up the tournaments. As the MARHA grows, we hope to one day be able
to include all teams in the Middle Atlantic Region, and extend to
the entire eastern U.S. and Canada.
